Blog commenting can be a great aspect of a marketing strategy.
It’s a way to add value to a topic in your niche. It can benefit all parties involved:
- Blog Owner
- Readers
- You
Obviously there are a few general rules to follow. I think it’s important to leave positive comments. You don’t want to make the author look bad. Otherwise it’s not a win for them. You also don’t want to make the readers feel bad or insulted. And you don’t want to make yourself look bad.
So the main beacon with blog commenting is that you want to add value and make it a winning situation for all involved. These are the comments that get the most notice, engagement and ultimately more awareness for you and your brand.
There is a common question with blog commenting and it’s about word count?
The answer really depends.
Short blog comments, just a few words, can be valuable, but usually they aren’t. They might not necessarily hurt anything, but they don’t really add value to the discussion. Other than the fact that you might be the only comment or one of hundreds.
In my experience, the best blog comments are usually a few sentences to a few paragraphs. That means about 100-300 or so words. There are certainly exceptions. A good blog comment could be one question that leads to further discussion from the author and the reader. There might also be instances where a 500 or even a 1,000-word comment could really add to the discussion and topic at hand.
But 100-300 words is a pretty good rule of thumb. And probably even leaning toward the 100 word count more than the 300.
Here is an example of something that might be about this word count: your own personal story.
Say you read a blog post about how to fix the air conditioner on a car. You can share your personal story about how you starting hearing noises from your car engine. Then the air conditioning started being hit or miss. Then it started blowing hot air and then debris started shooting out. Then eventually you were able to figure out the issue and solve the problem.
That can be a great comment. One that adds to the discussion and doesn’t offend the author. It’s great all around.
Blog comments should be around 100 words. Shorter comments can be fine. Longer comments can be fine. But that’s a good gauge for word count. Your main gauge is to try and add value that is beneficial for all parties involved.
